Local photojournalist and Ballard resident Matt Mills McKnight visited the Ballard Locks today and took some pictures. He said when he visited the fish ladder, he met James Wokal (above), a janitor who works under federal pay. Wokal said he was glad to be at work.

After Congress voted overwhelmingly on a measure to end the shutdown and avert a budget crisis, the Ballard Locks reopened today at 6:30 a.m. It had been closed to pedestrians since the beginning of October, but it was still open to vessels.

Media outlets are reporting that the shutdown may come around again early next year. Many of the fundamental issues that divide Republicans and Democrats have still not been resolved. The current deal funds the government until January 15 and raises the debt ceiling until February 7.
