Federal Way graduate connects
SAN FRANCISCO -- Your sports question for this week is: Who hit the only walk-off home run in National League Championship Series history to send a team on to the World Series?
The answer is Travis Ishikawa of the San Francisco Giants.
The Federal Way High School graduate became the first to accomplish the feat in the NLCS Thursday when he blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and advance the Giants with a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Ishikawa and the San Francisco team will open the World Series on Tuesday at the home of the Kansas City Royals, and the 31-year-old Ishikawa's historical home run will no doubt be a part of the pregame highlights when the broadcast starts at 5 p.m.
Thommasen racks up 16 saves
FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Leyton Thommasen (Fr., Des Moines, Wash.) made an impressive 16 saves Friday, but Dylan Leathers' rebound of a penalty kick in the 109th minute allowed Linfield to escape with a 3-2 double overtime victory over the Boxers in Northwest Conference men's soccer action at Hanson Stadium.
The freshman goalkeeper played one of his best matches of the season, covering nearly every corner of the net in a strong offensive flurry by the Wildcats. He made a save on Moi Diaz's penalty kick in the 108th minute and then proceeded to save a first rebound attempt by Jake Baker before Leathers fire in from just two yards away for the game-winner.
Ugwoaba's efforts aid goal
BELLINGHAM -- Uche Ugwoaba (Jr., Burien/Highline) played a role in the Western Washington University men's soccer team's only goal in a recent 2-1 loss to Seattle Pacific University.
Ugwoaba played a long ball that Gabriele Zaccagnini (Sr., Olympia/Capital) flicked into the path of Tye Hastings (Sr., Mill Creek/Jackson) behind the SPU defense. Hastings took the pass drifting away from goal on a tight angle to the left, and hit a low shot across his body that went just inside the far post.
Gandy returns at WWU
BELLINGHAM -- Mount Rainier High School graduate Kiana Gandy will return for her sophomore season as a forward for the Western Washington University women's basketball team.
Gandy averaged 3.9 points and 2.3 rebounds as a freshman.
