The feeling of an instrument in your hands, as experienced musicians will tell you is more than just holding that object. It's often about the instrument's history, its character, the feel of a musical tool that you can bring your own expression to, making it your own.
Thunder Road Guitars in business since 2012, is largely based on that feeling. On June 27 they will open a new chapter in their own history when they open in a new location in the heart of the West Seattle Junction at 4736 California Ave SW.
Owner Frank Gross is a self proclaimed "guitar nerd" and the store which specializes in vintage and used guitars has built a worldwide following, largely through online sales. He's sold sold guitars to rock stars including Pete Townshend of the Who. "We do about 60% of our business online and 40% in store," Gross said. He brings his own musical background to the store, despite only being 29, he has ten years of experience as a touring musician, having traveled in Europe and "most of the United States."
That experience is useful not just for understanding the needs of fellow musicians but for his encyclopedic knowledge of the guitars he sells. Since so many instruments are sold online he must take them apart, and really get to know each guitar, noting if any updates or repairs are needed, and making them (aside from refinishing which goes out to specialists). Those descriptions and photos are what go online.
The new space was most recently occupied by the Sneakery sock store which closed a couple of months ago. Its a big step up for Thunder Road from 800 sq. feet at the former location on California Ave. SW to a little over 2000 sq. feet.
When he heard about the space becoming available Gross got a call from his friend Chad Beeler, who owns and operates The Bass Shop, similar to Thunder Road but dedicated to that instrument. Beeler first considered taking over the former Thunder Road location but Gross said, " Why don't you move into the store with us and share the space?"
Now Thunder Road and The Bass Shop offer sales, and repairs together. Soon, they will start to offer guitar instruction and expect to have in-store performances as they grow.
The store carries more than 200 instruments ranging in price from a $199 beginner guitar (new) to a $9,999 1959 Vintage Gibson Les Paul.
Thunder Road Guitars is open Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sundays from 11 to 4pm. Closed Mondays.
