Kennedy Catholic put the wraps on an 8-0 regular season with a 51-0 victory over Hazen this past Friday, but the game was not as pretty of a package as it may sound.
The two teams stumbled and fumbled their way through the first quarter -- with the Lancers only managing a 9-0 lead because of a safety on a bad snap plus a fumble return for a touchdown.
The second quarter was not much better as JFK only led by a 16-0 score at halftime, only this time after an offensive touchdown.
The Lancers finally got on track late in the third quarter, then poured it on in the fourth quarter for the lopsided final margin.
Now Kennedy advances into loser-out postseason play, taking on Metro League No. 5 Roosevelt in a 7 p.m. opener Friday at Highline Memorial Stadium.
The Lancers enter as the Seamount League champions and as the No. 1 and only Class 3A seed out of the league.
Kennedy got onto the scoreboard first with 3:16 remaining on the first quarter clock.
A Hazen snap sailed over the punter's head for a two-point safety.
The defensive touchdown came with 1:16 to play in the period.
Peter Hildebrandt of the Lancers picked up a fumble and returned it six yards into the end zone for the score.
Griffin Mathews booted the extra point to increase the margin to 9-0.
Kennedy got its offense onto the scoreboard with 10:04 remaining in the second quarter.
The Lancers scored on the fourth play after taking over after a Hazen punt on the Highlander 48-yard line.
Treshaun Harrison ran the ball in from the 9-yard line, cutting back in his tracks and weaving through to the end zone.
Mathews' kick made it 16-0, and the advantage held through halftime.
No one managed to score again until the 3:08 mark of the third quarter.
Harrison once again found the end zone, this time on a 23-yard right side run.
Mathews' kick upped the advantage to 23-0.
Hazen then stalled out on downs, and a personal foul on the last play turned the ball over to the Lancers only 14 yards from paydirt.
Shammah Finau found it two plays later on a 6-yard run.
Mathews was once again successful on the PAT kick to make it a 30-0 game with 26 seconds to go in the third quarter.
The touchdowns came in quick succession in the fourth quarter.
Harrison ran right for a 37-yard touchdown at the 7:12 mark and Mathews' kick made it 37-0, then Kendell Oakes struck on a 7-yard run at the 5:28 mark and Mathews put the advantage at 44-0.
One of seven Hazen fumbles to go with two interceptions led to the final touchdown at 2:42.
Izaias Ramirez ran the ball in from the 2-yard line and Mathews made it 51-0.
Hazen fumbled at the end of its next drive and JFK did not get off another play as the game was now on a running clock because of the lopsided score.
