This traveling trophy isn't going anywhere for at least another year.
Evergreen High School has kept the hardware for the Tyee vs. Evergreen Staff/Alumni Basketball Game since its inaugural clash three years ago, including an 87-80 Wolverines victory over the Totems on Friday.
"It hasn't needed to travel," said Tyee athletic director John Yellam. "The first time Tyee lost by about 10, last year it was by two, and this year it was by seven."
Even though Yellam and the Totems would have liked to have nabbed the trophy for the first time, they weren''t complaining.
"It was good, it was fun," said Yellam of the game. "At an event like this everyone wins."
"It was another successful night," agreed Evergreen athletic director Chris DuBois.
This year the event raised between $300 and $400 for the Kenney Bui Memorial Scholarship Fund, which honors the Wolverines football player who died after sustaining a head injury this fall.
Aside from gate receipts, the fund also increased by way of frequent raffles of prizes throughout Friday's game.
"The money will go to the athletic scholarship to be awarded at the end of the school year," Yellam said of the prize to be given by the Highline School District.
The game includes men and women from the respective Evergreen and Tyee graduates and school staff.
On the court Friday, Evergreen got off to a sizeable 28-23 lead before the Totems went on a roll and tied it at 30-30 on a tipback with 5:35 to play in the second quarter.
Tyee them slipped ahead, 37-33, on a three-point shot before Evergreen got a tipin to make it 37-35 at halftime.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair.
Evergreen slipped ahead, 55-54, by the end of the third quarter, and the game was last tied at 57-57 after a Totems three-pointer at 10:27 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Wolverines went ahead for awhile, then Tyee came back and kept it close as late as 77-76 in favor of Evergreen.
A three-point cast found the net with 2:25 remaining, and just like that it was 80-76.
Tyee still clung within four at 84-80, but Evergreen made its free throws down the stretch to win going away.
Staff members who turned out for the victorious Wolverines team with "Team Bui" on their backs were Chris DuBois, Matt Eriickson and Otis Pimpleton, while the Alumni who came out were Caroline Tupa, Christian Saine, Dianna Stafford, Justin West, Josh Brown, Edward Tompson, Adrian Sorth, Anthony Berry-yoo, Justin Cox and David Massington.
Tyee had a larger staff turnout in Amanda Seigerman, AJ Campanelli, Brandon Abraham, Billy Thomas, Tremain Mack, Phil Willenbrock, Seyti Sidibay and Brent Peterson. Alumni were Breonna Abraham, Darius Terry, Jaylen Plunkett, Nebiu Kinfu, Morgan Reader, David Reader and Ken Ruffer.
