Discover Burien update
Tue, 02/23/2016
Thanks to the generosity of our members, and an organizational partnership with the Burien/White Center Rotary Club, Discover Burien was able to establish a scholarship fund this year to help the students in our community achieve their education and career goals. The organization is proud to announce the first recipient is Jose Niizuma. Jose is a senior at Highline High School where he maintains a 3.7 GPA as well as participates in athletics and serves as the president of the national honor society. Jose is also active in the Burien community volunteering at Sylvester Middle School as well as Highline Hospital where he discovered his love of medicine. He hopes to attend medical school and return to Burien as an emergency department physician. “I am so excited and grateful to the Discover Burien board and organization, thank you” offered Jose when he was notified that he would receive $2,500 in a scholarship award this year.
“The mission of our organization is to create and sustain a vibrant economy and dynamic community through promotion and education. Establishing this scholarship fund enables our organization to fulfill our mission on several levels. Any economic development strategy needs to focus on supporting existing business and commerce, as well as finding new ways to nourish and encourage future investment.” Offered Executive Director Andrea Reay “One of the ways we can do that effectively is to invest in our children and their future. This scholarship fund is an investment in our community and for our community, one that we hope will bring lasting benefits to Burien.”
Discover Burien will present Jose with an award at the annual dinner March 18th. A second scholarship will be awarded this year and applications are available in the office at Discover Burien. Donations to the scholarship fund can be received at any time and are fully tax deductible.
