West Seattle threw 13 runs onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning Friday, turning a 7-3 deficit into an eventual 16-7 win.
It was the Westsiders' third straight win coming out of the loser's bracket in the District 7 age 9-10 Little League baseball all-star tournament, advancing them into championship action against Renton starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the PacWest complex in SeaTac.
West Seattle must win that game and a would-be if-necessary game scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday to take the district title and advance to state.
The Westsiders trailed early in Friday's game by as much as a 6-1 score, and were still down 7-3 before the big rally in the fifth.
"These boys once they get going and start hitting the ball, they don't stop," said West Seattle manager Mike Fahy. "We're excited to play Renton tomorrow. We owe them a better game than last time."
The Westsiders opened the tournament with a 22-0 victory over Seattle Central, but fell to Renton by a 15-2 margin the next day.
West Seattle came back to defeat PacWest by a 24-2 score and South Highline National by a 17-7 margin to reach Friday's losers bracket final.
"I'm proud of these boys," said Fahy, who is assisted by coaches Sean Eley and Brian Sherick.
Team members are Tristan Buehring, Chase Dodson, Parker Eley, Caden Fahy, Connor Floyd, Wyatt Glover, Matthew Hazelgrove, Jordan Holloway, Brock Moore, Joe Sherick, Blake Taft, Bobby Trigg and Ryan Whitney.
Age 10-11
The West Seattle age 10-11 all-star baseball team took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning Friday, only to see it evaporate on three runs in the bottom of the inning and one in the bottom of the sixth and final inning.
The winning run scored on a bases loaded walkoff single to right by South Highline National's Cole Fenton.
West Seattle finished third in the tournament with the loss in what was the losers bracket final.
Westside starter Felix Schlede had allowed only two hits going into the bottom of the fifth and struck out the first batter in the inning, but had to be removed on a pitch count rule.
The bottom fell out for West Seattle from there, and now the SHN team from Normandy Park will play PacWest for the championship at 9 a.m. Saturday, also at PacWest. The if-necessary game is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday.
West Seattle scored all four of its runs in the top of the fifth.
Emmett Weber led off with a double to left, then Lachlan Swanson singled him home.
Nolan Whorton followed with a single and Rob Foisy singled in Swanson. Schlede followed with an RBI hit down the left-field line, scoring two runs and winding up at second.
But South Highline National bounced back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double off the fence in center field by Fenton being the big blow.
West Seattle was managed by Mark Alfano, who was assisted by coaches James Padilla and Matt Schlede.
Team members were Luke Alfano, Owen Earls, Rob Foisy, Miles Gosztola, Mason Holmes, Julian Quian, Matthew Rhinehart, Felix Schlede, Lachlan Swanson, Emmett Weber, Nolan Whorton and Alexander Zanolli.
