information from SDOT
Contractors working for the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) began construction on lower SW Spokane St between East Marginal Way and SW Klickitat St (excluding the deck of the Swing Bridge). The project is expected to take about three months to complete.
In addition to repaving the road, the project includes:
• A new pedestrian crossing on the west side of the intersection of SW Spokane St & 11th Ave SW
• New and upgraded curb bulbs and curb ramps
• Replacing two active railroad crossings
• Removal of an abandoned railroad crossing
• Construction of a raised sidewalk on the north side of the 900 block of SW Spokane St, creating a speed bump to slow people driving as they cross the paths of people walking or biking on the West Seattle Bridge Trail
• Repair sections of sidewalk and trail where tree roots have badly cracked the surface
Construction over the next two weeks will largely be confined to the sidewalks and edges of the road:
• This week (through August 12) work begins on the installation of the new pedestrian crossing, signal, and ramps at the intersection of SW Spokane St & 11th Ave SW, which will require the demolition of some existing sidewalk segments. (The impacted area is outlined in orange on the accompanying map.)
• The deceleration lane on eastbound SW Spokane St will be closed from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., but the adjacent lane (11.5’) will remain open, permitting motorists/trucks to turn as desired. The acceleration lane on the other side of the intersection will also be closed at times of the day, but with the adjacent receiving lane available for trucks and other vehicles to merge back onto SW Spokane St.
• Pedestrians and bicyclists will be detoured from the impacted segment of the West Seattle Bridge Trail, with the detour route to be posted.
• During the week of August 15-21, crews will be replacing curb and gutters along sections of SW Klickitat Way and SW Manning St. The westbound travel lane width will be reduced, but enough space will remain for trucks and other vehicles to continue.
• No detours, other than that outlined for the West Seattle Bridge Trail are expected in the next few weeks.
Subsequent traffic advisories will outline further work and its impacts to the roads and sidewalk/trail. www.seattle.gov/transportation/pave_spokane.htm.
