Seattle Police have recently seen an increase in bicycle thefts in the North Admiral and the Alaska Junction neighborhoods. Due to this increase, the SW Precinct would like to provide the community with some helpful prevention techniques.
Always lock your bicycle- even if you are only stepping away for a minute- we recommend that you utilize a solid steel U-lock. Secondly, when storing bicycles- whenever possible, store in well-lit and highly traveled areas. Lastly, consider registering your bicycle, knowing the serial numbers and/or engraving identifying markings on your bicycle- these steps can help make it easier to return your bicycle to you if stolen and recovered.
The majority of the bicycles stolen are unlocked or locked with poor quality cable locks.
• Never secure you bicycle with a cheap lock
• Always secure your bicycle to a bike rack or solid object
• Secure both wheels and frames
• When possible, park in well-lit and highly traveled areas
• Remove quick releases altogether- bolt the parts onto the bicycle
• Remember that locks are only a deterrent
• When storing bicycles at home, store in locked and secured areas
• When possible, do not leave bike locked outside overnight
is there any comment from the police department about the large number of bikes being parted out in the encampment under the lower bridge's east end and next to the 1st ave exit from the west seattle bridge? there are literally piles of bikes.
