information from SDOT
In September 2015, SDOT began the process of modifying the channelization on 35th SW to help achieve project goals. One lane of traffic was removed in each direction and a center turn lane was installed. Signal timings were lengthened to accommodate traffic volumes and the speed limit was lowered from 35 to 30 mph.
In the ten years before the 2015 redesign of the southern segment of 35th Avenue SW, nearly 500 collisions occurred between SW Roxbury Street and SW Morgan Street. An average of one pedestrian was involved in a crash annually with some years having as many as 4 pedestrians involved in crashes. There were 9 serious injuries and 1 fatality collision in that 10 year period. Since the roadway was redesigned, zero pedestrians have been involved in crashes, there have been zero serious injury or fatal collisions, and there have been 45 total collisions.
Phase 2 Update:
Since 2015 we’ve committed to reviewing conditions along 35th Avenue SW and collaborating with the community to find solutions to safety challenges. Safety is our number one priority, and this project helps us reach our 2030 Vision Zero goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries. This project will address one of the top streets in the city for serious crashes and will enhance access to along and across the street and to destinations like parks, libraries, schools, and shopping.
Phase 2 Project Scope:
We’re excited to continue our work this fall to install additional safety enhancements including pavement repairs, crossing improvements, and new signals. Below are the major upgrades we’ll be installing in 2018 (see map for further details):
- New left turn signals at SW Barton St
- New signal at SW Dawson St with new curb ramps and pavement repair
- New turn restrictions, curb ramps, and pavement repair at S W Juneau St
- New curb ramps and pavement repair at SW Kenyon St
- New signal with pedestrian and bicycle crossing improvements at SW Graham St as part of the West Seattle Neighborhood Greenway (2019)
Project Schedule:
Construction will begin in fall 2018 and continue into 2019 with minimal impact to the traveling public. Following completion, we’ll monitor the corridor and begin outreach on a 36th Avenue SW Neighborhood Greenway connection to Camp Long.
Project Goals:
- Implement safety measures to prevent serious or fatal collisions
- Provide predictable and efficient travel for people driving and taking transit
- Enhance pedestrian access to key destinations along the street
