The last day of high school can mean a lot of things. Freedom, new horizons, goodbyes and celebrations. For students at West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School it meant an early morning dash into the water at Seacrest Park Cove 2, and some pranks at the school June 15.
West Seattle High's Willow Jane Harvey shared a video of the dash of about 17 people brave enough to take the plunge, which like most plunges was mercifully brief. Afterward the group all went to their homes, showered, and regathered at the Chelan Cafe for an informal Senior breakfast.
At Sealth the intent was distinctly more comical. At around 4 am we were told, four senior boys managed to remove the famous bull that has sat atop the building at 35th SW and SW Webster for decades. That building is being remodeled currently into the Best of Hands Barrelhouse so the bull had been detached from its street front perch. It was taken down and moved to the central courtyard at Sealth, and partially buried in the ground. It was later retrieved by the owners and reportedly suffered some damage.
No names were offered of course but those who know also pointed out that the lobby entry for Sealth had a layout of the number 18 (to commemorate the graduation year) in plastic solo cups of water and a balloon filled stairway inside the school's atrium.
The fact the bull was damaged actually makes me a bit mad. That is an iconic part of West Seattle and I know folks who are trying to make sure it stays in West Seattle. I know it was done in the name of fun and a prank but it was still stealing and damaging someone else's property. Maybe not the best choice. If they had taken and returned undamaged, I would feel differently.
