A Horizon Airlines Q400 prop aircraft that was stolen from a storage area at SeaTac Airport, took off and crashed on Ketron Island, in Pierce County Friday evening. The plane flew roughly 25 miles before going down. The aircraft was a Dehavilland Dash 8-400. The plane was chased in the air by two fighter aircraft according to official reports who were attempting to get the plane to land at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
It is believed that a 29 year old ground services agent now being described as suicidal from an unknown airline at the airport took the plane, executed what was observed to be apparently acrobatic maneuvers and/or displaying lack of flying skills in the air, but then crashed into the island.
The man who stole the aircraft was recorded speaking to air traffic controllers saying "I'm just a broken guy...I didn't know I had a few screws loose until today," he was hoping for soft landing but "wanted to see what the aircraft can do" before executing some barrel roll maneuvers. The man apologized to people for what he was doing.
The crash set off fires on the island which is sparsely inhabited.
The incident disrupted arrivals and departures at SeaTac Airport until midnight though the ground stop was ended around 10:15pm
