High schools
Boys basketball
Snow forced the cancellation of this week’s Metro League Championship and District qualifying tournaments, with seeding into the upcoming Sea-King District tournament based on regular season finishes.
West Seattle advances as the Metro League No. 7 team, while Ballard and Chief Sealth were among the teams eliminated from district qualification.
Weather permitting, the Wildcats will open the Sea-King tournament with a 7 p.m. Saturday visit to Roosevelt. The winner of the loser-out game advances to play again at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at Sammamish High School.
Meanwhile, in the 4A West Central District tournament, Kennedy is at Mount Rainier for a 7 p.m. Thursday opener with the winner playing again at 12 p.m. Saturday.
Foster is an entry into the 2A West Central District tournament.
Girls basketball
The girls Metro League tournaments were also cancelled because of snow and cold weather, with West Seattle advancing to the Sea-King District tournament as the No. 3 seed and Ballard as the No. 4 based on regular season finishes. Chief Sealth was eliminated.
Ballard, weather permitting, opens with a 7 p.m. home game Saturday needing a win to advance to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday action at Sammamish.
West Seattle gets a first round bye and is set to open with a 4 p.m. Tuesday game in the Chief Sealth gymnasium against an opponent to be determined.
Foster, meanwhile, received a first round bye in the 2A West Central District tournament and opens with a 7 p.m. game in its own gymnasium Saturday.
Kennedy Catholic is involved in the 4A West Central District tournament and Seattle Christian is in the 1A.

Thunderbirds
Seattle will be at home at the Showare Center in Kent playing the Portland Winterhawks in 7:35 p.m. Western Hockey League action Friday before entertaining Medicine Hat at 6:05 p.m. Saturday and the Tri-City Americans at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
Stars
Next up for the Tacoma Stars professional indoor soccer team is a 7:35 p.m. Friday, Feb 15 game at the home of the San Diego Sockers.
Seawolves
Seattle’s defending Major League Rugby championship team that calls the Starfire complex in Tukwila home pays a 1 p.m. Sunday visit to the NOLA (New Orleans) Gold.
After that the Seawolves’ next home game is at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17 against the Toronto Arrows.
Both games will be carried on the ROOT Sports cable television network.
Mariners
Pitchers and catchers report Monday to open Seattle’s spring training camp in Peoria, Ariz.
Colleges
Husky men
The University of Washington visits Arizona for a 6 p.m. Pac-12 men’s basketball game Thursday before dropping in on Arizona State at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Both games can be seen on the ESPN2 cable television network.
Husky women
Washington hosts Arizona for a 7 p.m. game Thursday before entertaining Arizona State at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Cougar men
Washington State University is also in Arizona this week.
The Cougars visit Arizona State at 5 p.m. Thursday and Arizona at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with the Pac-12 cable television network showing both games live.
Cougar women
Washington State hosts Arizona State at 7 p.m. Thursday in Pullman before getting a visit from Arizona at 12 p.m. Saturday.
Redhawk men
Seattle University entertains Utah Valley for a 1 p.m. game Saturday.
Redhawk women
Seattle is at Utah Valley for 2 p.m. Saturday action.
Falcon men
Seattle Pacific University is at Alaska Anchorage for an 8 p.m. Thursday game before dropping in on Alaska Fairbanks at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Falcon women
Seattle Pacific hosts Central Washington University at 7 p.m. Thursday and gets a 2 p.m. Saturday visit from Northwest Nazarene.
Bulldog men
Gonzaga University is at home in Spokane playing San Francisco at 6 p.m. Thursday before entertaining Saint Mary’s at 7 p.m. Saturday.
ROOT Sports will show Thursday’s game and Saturday’s will be carried nationally on ESPN.
Bulldog women
Gonzaga goes to Portland for a 4:30 p.m. Saturday game on the women’s side.
