Sounders
Call it heart stoppage time.
Seattle scored the winning goal in the third minute of extra time in a 3-2 clash against Minnesota Monday, earning its way to Saturday's 5 p.m. Major League Soccer championship match at Columbus against the Crew.
The Sounders team that trains in Tukwila found itself trailing Minnesota United by a 2-0 margin with 15 minutes remaining in regular time when Will Bruin found the back of the net to cut the advantage to 2-1.
Raul Rudiaz scored the equalizer in the 89th minute and Gustav Svensson headed in the winning goal off a Nicolas Lodeiro corner kick in the third minute of stoppage.
Both Bruin and Svensson came in fresh off the bench.
Svensson was also coming off missed time for testing positive for COVID-19 without symptoms.
It will be Seattle's fourth trip to the MLS Cup final in five years, with 2018 being the only year the Sounders fell short.
Channel 13 will show Saturday's match live.
Seahawks
Seattle stands at 8-4 going into a 1:05 p.m. Sunday home game against the 0-12 New York Jets.
Channel 7 will televise the action live from Lumen Field.
One might think that will be an easy win, but New York's other team -- the Giants -- just knocked the Seahawks off by a 17-12 score this past Sunday. The Giants stand at only 5-7 including the win and were 10-point underdogs going into the game.
Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson suffered five sacks in completing 27 of 43 passes for 263 yards.
DK Metcalf caught five passes for 80 yards and Tyler Lockett caught six for 63 yards.
Chris Carson ran the ball 13 times for 65 yards.
Jamal Adams had eight tackles, three assists and one sack. Jordyn Brooks racked up five tackles and six assists.
Colleges
Husky football
Washington (3-1) visits Oregon (3-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene with the Pac-12 North Division title on the line.
The action can be seen on Channel 13.
The Huskies almost pulled off a miracle comeback for the second week in a row this past Saturday. They trailed Stanford, 24-3, at halftime but rallied back before coming up short, 31-26.
UW quarterback Dylan Morris 23 of 35 passes for 254 yards against the Cardinal.
Rome Odunze caught five passes for 68 yards and Sean McGrew carried the ball 16 times for 65 yards.
Edufuan Ulofoshio led the defense again, this time amassing 18 tackles including 13 solo tackles.
Cougar football
Washington State University hosts California for 7:30 p.m. action Saturday on the Pac-12 cable television network.
The Cougars go in with a 1-2 record and the Bears of Berkeley are 1-3.
WSU is coming off a disappointing 38-13 loss to USC after missing two weeks because of COVID-19.
Cougars quarterback Jayden de Laura completed 18 of 29 passes for 134 yards with Benard Bell catching 11 for 76 and Travell Harris seven for 74.
Deon McIntosh carried the ball 10 times for 65 yards.
Husky women
Washington got off to a 3-0 start before falling to No. 2-ranked Stanford by an 83-50 score Sunday.
The Huskies' strong start included an 80-53 victory over California this past Friday as Pac-12 play opened.
Freshman sensation Tameiya Sadler swished in 21 points to lead Washington to victory.
"Tameiya did a fantastic job of playing downhill when we needed her to," said Huskies head coach Jody Wynn. "She's just so tough. She doesn't force anything."
Next up for the Huskies is a 4 p.m. Friday home game against Washington State. They added a 2 p.m. Sunday home game against Portland to their schedule.
Friday's action will be carried on Pac-12 cable television.
Husky men
The University of Washington hosts Seattle University at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oregon at a time to be announced Saturday and Montana at 8 p.m. next Wednesday.
Pac-12 cable will show all three games.
Cougar men
Washington State University hosts Idaho at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Pullman and Portland State at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Pac-12WA carries Wednesday's game and Sunday's can be seen on Pac-12 cable.
Cougar women
WSU visits Washington at 4 p.m. Friday on Pac-12 cable before hosting Idaho at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Redhawk men
After visiting Washington at 8 p.m. Wednesday on Pac-12 cable Seattle University entertains Northwest University at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Redhawk women
Seattle University hosts Northwest University at 6 p.m. Thursday and Montana at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Bulldog men
No. 1-ranked Gonzaga is off until Dec. 19 because of COVID-19 problems.
Bulldog women
Gonzaga hosts Montana at 2 p.m. Sunday in Spokane.
