SDOT: High bridge repair - More work on post-tensioning; continuing bridge maintenance

Progress on the new post-tensioning system continued this week as we completed more form work for the system’s structural components. We will continue prep work for additional concrete pours in the coming weeks.
The next step in the post-tensioning process is to prepare the steel cables by threading them through openings in the new concrete components. After we complete the final concrete pours and all the concrete components have cured, we will begin to tighten the strands. By tightening these strands that span the length the of the bridge, we will compress the concrete to prevent future cracking and strengthen the structure.
Removing and replacing the old sign bridge structures from the West Seattle Bridge.
We have also been working day and night this week to replace overhead traffic signs and their structures in preparation for when we reopen the bridge to traffic. This work involves chipping away concrete from the base of the existing structure and replacing the old foundation with a brand new one.
