U.S. Senator Patty Murray made a campaign stop in West Seattle on Friday with NARAL ProChoice President Mini Timmeraju. The pair spoke at C&P Coffee introduced by Democratic party local organizer Ryan OConnor.
Timmeraju, whose career includes time with Planned Parenthood and the Hillary Clinton campaign spoke about the importance of reproductive rights. "This is the first mid-term election we've had after we've lost a fundamental constitutional right that we took for granted," she said, referring to the Supreme Court's ruling regarding Roe vs. Wade.
"Our opposition has never been more extreme, frankly outrageous," Timmeraju said..."We're going to fight for the best most audacious, policy set of solutions possible."
She praised Murray saying, "Your Senator Patty Murray has been the tip of the spear in the US Senate making sure Senate Democrats do not compromise on our rights and our freedoms."
Murray said, "When it comes to women's rights we're not giving up...Why should politicians decide the issue of choice? I introduced the Women's Protection Act which will codify Roe so that women in every state will once again have access to the reproductive health care they need. But I didn't stop. I went out on the Senate floor and I tried to pass legislation that if somebody tried to travel out of their state, to a state where it was still legal that they would not be punished. The Republicans blocked that, capturing women in their own states for health care. I was stunned and astonished....I tried to pass a bill to make sure that doctors who provide reproductive care could not be arrested. Why? Because I was over in Spokane at Planned Parenthood. We have providers there who live a few miles away in Idaho. They were concerned that if they came to Spokane to do their job they would get arrested when they went home. So I tried to pass legislation to assure that providers would not get arrested if they provided an abortion in a state where it's legal. They blocked us from doing that. That is astonishing to me.
We're trying to make sure that that people can't track women on apps who are trying to travel to another state. Let me make this real for you. They are trying to track women who go from Texas to California to a Planned Parenthood facility using their iPhones to track where they've been. If you've been parked at a Planned Parenthood facility for a little bit of time and go back home to Texas they are tracking you."
She went on to talk about the American Rescue Plan, the Infrastructure bill, the Chips Act to build computer chip fabrication plant construction in the U.S., the Pact Act for veterans exposed to toxic chemicals. And the Inflation Reduction Act which lowers prescription drug costs, and caps insulin costs at $35.
