When Sheldon Cross heard Cal Poly call his name, he accepted.
Now the seven year head football coach at Kennedy Catholic High School is headed for San Luis Obispo in California to become the Mustangs' offensive coordinator.
Cross joins the staff of new Cal Poly head coach Paul Wulff -- the head coach at Washington State University from 2008-11 and the head coach at Eastern Washington University from 2000-07.
California Polytechnic State University, as Cal Poly is formally known, is a member of the NCAA Division I Big Sky conference along with Eastern Washington University and such schools as Idaho State, Montana, Montana State and Portland State.
Wulff was an assistant at Cal Poly the past three seasons before his promotion last month.
Cross led the Lancers of Kennedy Catholic to a second place Class 4A high school finish this past season.
He also served as the offensive coordinator for the victorious West team at the 2022 All-American Bowl.
Kennedy Catholic president and principal Matthew Mohs is among those who hate to see Cross go.
"We announce coach Cross' leaving with a mixture of joy and sadness," Mohs said in a press release. "We are grateful for where Coach has taken the football program during his tenure and we are sorry to lose him: however, we are happy for this new opportunity and wish him and his family well. He will always be part of the Lancer family."
Cross finishes with four straight North Puget Sound League 4A titles for the Lancers and won NPSL Coach of the Year the same four seasons.
He was Washington's 4A state Coach of the Year in 2022.
He has 55 wins to show for his tenure at Kennedy Catholic.
Under Cross the Lancers averaged 42 points per game, passed for a total of 21,585 yards and scored 250 touchdowns.
