Walkout at Chief Sealth protests the sexually charged messages by football team members
Hundreds of students and teachers from Chief Sealth High School took part in a walkout that assembled on the Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex on Oct. 20. The walkout was in support of female students who were named in a series of sexually charged text messages between members of the school football team.
Those protesting feel that the suspension from the team was not enough punishment for the acts and wore pink in support of those female students named.
The students involved were taken off the team and were not seen at school on Friday.
In a letter to the school families Principal Ray Garcia Morales said that his adminstrative team was considering further action:
The school administration team is investigating the concerns and exploring appropriate discipline and additional corrective action.
Our social workers and school leaders are reaching out to offer direct support to each student who was a subject of the messages.
Chief Sealth International athletic leaders are developing a plan to promote gender equity, prevent sexual harassment, and help our students better understand what behaviors are expected of students and athletes.
The protesters left the school and marched across the street to the Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex where they gathered to listen student speakers and share their concerns.
