Reid Hale

Reid Emory Hale, of Bothell, WA died peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2024, at the age of 93. Reid was born on December 21, 1930, in Yakima, Washington to Emory and Gladys Hale. He moved to western Washington when his father took the role of Chief Enforcement Officer for the Washington State Liquor Control Board.

Reid graduated from Lake Washington High School. He subsequently entered the United States Air Force in 1950, proudly serving in the Korean War.  During this time, he met and married his beloved wife, Mildred (Milly) Kirk. Upon discharge, Reid entered the University of Washington, majoring in Journalism, graduating in 1956. Reid then began his career with the Seattle PI followed by owning and editing newspapers in Burien, Ballard-University District and North Snohomish County. A newspaper colleague who knew him well said, "Reid was a consummate newsman in the strictest sense of the word.  He was very involved and respected in the community."

Reid and Milly settled in Burien where they raised their two sons.

Reid was active in a wide variety of community organizations including Rotary (over 50 years), Board of Trustees of Highline Community College, various Chambers of Commerce, and the Northshore Performing Arts Foundation Board.

Reid was a voracious reader, a lover of history.  His knowledge of the subject was spectacular.  He was our Google before there was Google, and you always wanted him on your side in Trivial Pursuit.  He loved the Seattle Mariners and was a long-time season ticket holder dating back to the Kingdome era, attending the 1979 All Star Game here in Seattle.

Reid was preceded in death by his wife Milly and is survived by his loving sons, Douglas (Katherine) of Bothell, Gordon (Julie) of Anacortes; and adoring grandchildren, Sarah, Jessica and Millie-Ann.
