Get ready to get your hands dirty! Potterings Studio, a brand-new creative space catering to beginner potters, is set to officially open its doors on May 1, 2025, at 3400 Harbor Ave, Suite 132 in Activspace on Alki Beach. Owned by Lora Radford, whose diverse career includes experience as a marketing professional, the owner of Hotwire Coffeehouse, and work for Sound Transit, Potterings aims to be a welcoming and stress-free environment for anyone who has ever wanted to try pottery.
The grand opening celebration is scheduled for May 2nd and 3rd, offering a weekend of exciting activities. On Friday, May 2nd, from 6-8 pm, an open house will feature snacks and refreshments, along with a chance to win a free workshop and learn about Potterings memberships.
The fun continues on Saturday, May 3rd, from 12-5 pm with free mini try-it workshops including trinket dish, coat hook, plant holder, and bubble glazing demonstrations1. Attendees will also have another opportunity to win a free workshop and discover membership details. Throughout the grand opening weekend, the community is invited to add their creative touch to a ceramic Potterings sign that will be displayed in the studio.
Potterings is designed as "the perfect place for you if you’ve ever wanted to try pottery but didn’t know where to start!". The studio's workshops are specifically designed for total beginners, requiring no prior experience. Participants can enjoy the hands-on fun of shaping clay and creating their own handmade pieces to take home. The studio emphasizes a "Creativity Without Pressure" philosophy, where there is "no right or wrong way—just your way". It offers "A Space to Slow Down," inviting individuals to embrace the process of working with clay.
Potterings will offer affordable beginner workshops and flexible classes designed to expand participants' knowledge. The "Pottering series" is geared towards beginner potters interested in learning how to create simple and functional ceramics using techniques like rolling, forming, smoothing, pinch pots, and glazing. Classes and workshops are kept small, limited to six students, to ensure a hands-on and immersive experience with supportive and encouraging instructors.
Featured workshops already on the schedule include Making an Egg Carton on Friday, June 13th, a Luminary Workshop on Sunday, June 29th, and a Garlic and Herb bowl workshop on Saturday, July 19th. Each of these 3-hour workshops costs $45 per person.
For those looking for more independent practice, Potterings offers open studio time every Wednesday from 6-8 pm for a cost of $40 per session, with advance registration recommended. The open studio includes clay, glazes, underglazes, englobes, tools, and kiln firing, with an experienced instructor available for guidance.
A monthly membership is also available for $105 for an individual or $150 for couples/friends, which includes open studio time, kiln firings, and the use of studio equipment and glazes.
Potterings' values center around creating handmade, heartfelt pieces. The studio believes that "everyone has an artist inside them" and aims to provide a space to explore, learn, and create without pressure.
After creating their pottery, participants can expect their glazed and fired pieces to be ready for pickup approximately three to four weeks after the workshop or class Potterings will email when the pieces are ready and requests pickup within 14 days.
Located at 3400 Harbor Ave SW, #132 Activspace, Alki Beach, West Seattle. Potterings encourages those interested in workshops, classes, or open studio to register via email at potteringclasses@gmail.com or through Eventbrite.
