Some did good and some did better, but none did better than Savannah Coe.
Coe captured two first places and a part of two winning relays for her third-place team, the Marine Hills Summer League Swim Club, in action at the 2005 Southern Championship at the Arbor Heights pool Thursday.
"Savannah had a really good meet," said Suzanne Rychlik, wife of Ted, who coaches the Decatur Gators high school team.
It's not just Coe who won the 50 breaststroke (34.69) and 100 Individual Medley, (1:07.31), it's the whole group that's good.
"We have a strong 12 and under age group," said Rychlik. "On Monday, they set the 200 free pool record."
'They' would be Coe, Kaia Barth, Kayla Ramey and Amber Cratsenberg.
Those four won the 200 free at southerns in 1:52.53, bettering their previous mark by over a second and did more of the same in the 200 medley in a time of 2:04.34. It's noted this foursome was over eight seconds faster over the second fastest team in the medley and over five seconds faster in the free.
Coe had no company near her for sure in her races, beating out her nearest competitor by nearly four seconds in the 100 IM and by over two seconds in the 50 breast.
"I have been swimming for King (Aquatic Club) since age five," said Coe.
Marine Hills, who went 5-2 during the dual meet season, had Coe never losing any of her races she swam in individually.
"I just love it, I do it every day," said Coe, a sixth grader. "Swimming is my favorite sport. This is fun."
Suzanne likes people to come to practice and try their hardest.
"Hardest" makes sense for Coe to like that trait of Rhyclik's.
"I always work hard at practices," said Coe.
Others that worked hard at southerns from the nearby Twin Lakes Penguins included D'voreaux Cann. Cann is on the younger side of his under 12 boys age group so he competes against year-older boys and at his age that certainly makes a difference since boys go through growth spurts when he's just a little older.
He took second in the boys 14 and under 100 IM , 1:04.22 to 1:02.69. He won all city in the event last year and smoked them by a couple seconds in southerns. More of the same from Cann last year but not this year in the 100 free where he went against taller, older swimmers and was 57.12, way back from the 55.76 of second and 51.75 of first.
"He holds his own (against the older boys)," said Twin Lakes coach Erika Sycamore. "It's harder in the lower age bracket for him this year, but he has a competitive edge to him. He will get out there and he will race."
Finally, for Cann, good news that proves he really can swim with the bigger and do better than they. Cann won the 50 fly in 27.22, getting a hearty, well-deserved , high-five right after his victory from second place competitior, Paul Jovanovich, who touched out at 27.53.
But Cann can also speak about his experiences now of the age-older age group.
Is it tougher?
"Yeah," said Cann, 11.
The 50 fly was a good win for Cann and he will tell you why.
"Because he (Jovanovich) was seeded higher," said Cann, with prelim times being 27.47 coming in to southerns for Cann and 27.19 for Jovanovich.
"He beat me before," said Cann.
Some others that advised others that they will be a threat at the all city meet that went on Aug. 2 at Blue Ridge in Ballard included the Penguins' Blake Jordan, who won the boys 12 and under 50 fly in 31.90, over two seconds ahead of his nearest competitor and most importantly, he improved.
"He dropped almost a full second in his butterfly," said Sycamore. "We had a lot of fast swims. A lot of swimmers moved up."
The top six times get taken from the southern meet as well as the northern meet with north and central Seattle swim clubs altogether qualifying for the grand daddy of them all, all city.
Some others doing well for the Fish and Tree of Marine Hills and the Penguins were TL's Briley Boggs, second, in the 14 and under 50 free in 26.10, just one hundredth of a second from first in that one. In the same race, TJ's Eryn Murphy took fourth in 26.53. In the girls 18 and under 50 free, Charlene Walton took third in 26.25.
