A scoreless tie on the scoreboard may look boring, but not Thursday's Federal Way vs. Decatur battle at Federal Way Memorial.
Both teams played well in the passing department and both played a physical, aggressive game.
Decatur put the pressure on at the end to try for a late winning shot, but came up empty.
"We're starting to do good things," said new Decatur head coach Christy Gross. "The last 15 minutes were great."
Gross knew what her favorite shot was.
"A defender came up, Christina Valenzuela, and had a beautiful shot that just missed the post," Gross said.
Kaelyn Kanesta earned the Decatur half of the double shutout.
"She's playing real well," said Gross of Kanesta, who had nine shutouts last year.
Federal Way's shutout went to Sam Freed.
"It was our first shutout, too," said Federal Way head coach and former Eagles star player Justin Baumgardt.
Decatur improved to 2-1-3 in South Puget Sound League North Division action with the win as the Eagles fell to 0-3-3.
"We're still young and coming together," Gross said.
Federal Way found itself short handed in the absence of key senior players Kaitlyn Keyes.
"We played well for when we're missing out star leader," Baumgardt said. "She was on a college visit."
