Eagles soar over Royals

Kent-Meridian came, saw, and, oh, did they not conquer as the Federal Way Eagles football team, powered by the Andre Barrington running and catching spectacular plays, destroyed the Royals, 35-12, at Federal Way Memorial Field Friday.
The Eagles improved to 3-1 overall and, more importantly, to 2-0 in the South Puget Sound League North while K-M fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the North.
Everyone helped with the win but Barrington helped the most, barreling through the middle time and again for 17 carries totaling 99 yards. And don't forget the 100 other yards gained from pass catching, including a 74-yarder for score two of the Eagles.
"He's special. Close to 200 all-purpose yards," said Federal Way head coach John Meagher.
It was close to begin with.
The Eagles scored out of the gate as in a couple, three plays -- including a Justin Southern to Aaron Broussard catch inside the 20 and a Barrington run in after that -- amassing 60 some yards in a drive to a touchdown and a 6-0 lead. The only blotch was Kelyn Rowe's blocked extra-point kick try. And then it was close still because K-M marched down the field in seven perfect plays for 80 yards in five minutes time to make it 6-6.
The Eagles came right back to score on a two play, 84-yard drive, including the aforementioned 74-yarder that was a screen pass from Southern to Barrington rolling around the right side and then up the middle, untouched, all the way into the end zone to make it 14-6.
Barrington wasn't through.
The Eagles defense did their job, Barrington included, since he was playing both sides of the ball. He was playing linebacker well. He came up with three tackles during the next K-M offensive sequence, and the Eagles got possession of the pigskin again. And Barrington continued his show, scoring this time from eight yards out.
After that No. 3 TD for Barrington he could have soaked up the spotlight for himself after this player-of-the-game performance, if there was such an award given, as he single handedly did things in this one to help his team win. It was a second four-touchdown game for the junior this season.
But the press on him was pressed elsewhere.
"The whole team helped, my receivers, lineman, fullback, (Alex) Dorland, my quarterback, my coaches, everyone helped," said Barrington, already getting notice from Division-1 schools Oregon, Nebraska and Michigan even though he's a junior.
"He's the best athlete I have ever coached," said the Eagles' Meagher.
He's good no doubt, but senior captain Broussard pointed out that Barrington has not been as good, too.
"A couple games were rough for him," said Broussard. "He was a 1,000 yard rusher last year."
So Broussard knows what Barrington can do with the football.
The Eagles should improve as Barrington gets tougher, Southern continues to make good passes, as, it was an he did in this game, for two scores, and the whole team becomes tougher in many different ways.
Speaking of bears, that is, the ones that open the holes for Barrington, it was Barringtton mentioning off those guys no problem.
"Andrew Pulu, Isaac Atimalala, Jordan Ramos, Johnny Detzler, and big Marcus James," said Barrington.
The Eagles pretty much rolled from there, scoring next on a Southern to Greylin James 16-yard strike into the right corner of the end zone to make it 28-6 with 5:27 to go in the first half.
That's how things went into halftime and then in the second half with eight and a half minutes left Southern found Broussard on a 30-yard pass play for TD toss number two for him to go with what would be 209 yards passing on the night.
K-M would score with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard run in after one of the Eagles only miscues, a fumble at the 25-yard line on a punt return. That could have been a reason for concern if the Eagles had punted and then K-M scores again and it's a much closer game. But the Eagles did not falter too much anyway. They did punt on their next possession on four downs but then Barrington intercepted a pass and that was nice capper to his all-around great efforts.
Still, things like that late fumble, and the fact that the score was close early make coach Meagher think this team still has a thing or two to learn to be like last year's team that went to the state playoffs and lost to Gig Harbor.
"We're still learning to be a winning football program," said Meagher.
Better than last year?
"Too early to tell," said Meagher. "We have the capability. Putting it together is another thing. We still have to learn how to put teams away. We still need better run defense between tackles we need to...As a coach, you're never satisifed. And hopefully as players, they are never satisfied either."
As a team?
"We are really coming together well, with our captains Aaron (Broussard) and Marcus (James) doing a great job. We have a tight group."
