AUBURN -- Todd Beamer senior Kaylyn Borden dazzled as an individual while Thomas Jefferson cashed in on dominating team depth to highlight the 2008 Federal Way All-City gymnastics meet last Wednesday.
Borden's source of superiority in her 34.5 first place all around performance drew its roots from a trio of winning performances. The Titan athlete captured solo gold on the vault (8.9) and uneven parallel bars (8.0) while staying light on her feet to tie teammate Jessica Freborn for an 8.9 first place on the balance beam. On the floor exercise, Borden danced to an 8.7 second place.
"I really loved the energy tonight," exclaimed Borden. "The crowd really pumped people up. Even though it was not a home crowd, it was fun. It felt good to be working well."
Capturing six of the top eight all around positions, Jefferson stockpiled 154.95 points to distance itself from Beamer (138.0), Federal Way (132.85) and Decatur (128.2).
All Federal Way School District high school gymnasts immediately packed their bags for Saturday's (after press time) South Puget Sound League sub-district meet at Kentwood High School.
Qualifiers from sub-district will compete for state positions from this Saturday's West Central District meet being held at Auburn Mountainview.
For the Raiders, senior Jennifer McCreery claimed bronze on the vault (8.25), beam (8.3) and floor (8.4) to go along with a tie for fifth on the bars (6.8) en route to a 31.75 all around second place.
"I'm proud of how I did in my last home meet," McCreery said. "I'm doing a new, more explosive floor routine this season. When the crowd gets into it, I feed off the crowd."
Springing to a 9.0 first place on the floor exercise, Raider Molly Gebhardt added a fourth place on the bars (7.0) on the way to a 31.1 third place on the all arounds.
"It was a good meet to end our home season," recalled Gebhardt. "We were focused and ready to be happy and have fun.
Fourth place on the floor (8.3) and fifth place on the vault (8.5) forged a 30.85 fourth place all around for TJ's Anna Wallace. Continuing the TJ roll call on the all around competition, Erin Chapin utilized ties for sixth on vault (8.1) and beam (7.4) to earn a 30.1 all around fifth place spot while Desiree Minnie claimed sixth place on all arounds (29.6) by virtue of a solid second place on bars (7.2). Kendall Swynenburg rounded out the all arounders in the seventh spot (28.7) on the strength of a fourth place tie on the on the beam (7.5) and fifth place on the floor (8.5). In individual competition, Mallory Nunley annexed a sixth place tie on the beam (8.0)
"We had a solid vault and went through steadily before we really brought it on the floor," said Jefferson head coach Debbie Hunter.
The 41.75 team score by the Raiders on the floor was by far the top score of any squad on any event for this meet.
In addition to the Borden and Freborn achievements, Beamer also showcased a 7.5 fourth place tie on the beam by Jessa Coleman and a sixth place tie (6,8) on the same event by Laura Schrader.
With several top point scorers unable to perform due to illness or injuries, the Titans still came away with some satisfaction.
"We did well with what we had," observed Beamer head coach Gina Mason.
Toiling arduously for the Patty Braun-coached Decatur Gators, sophomore Angela Hanson rode her 8.5 second place on the vault to an eighth place all around score of 28.4.
Federal Way gymnast Lydia Berger posted an 8.2 fourth place on the vault to pace the Eagle effort. Katherine Higgins vaulted to an 8.1 sixth place tie on the vault.
"This was a good meet for us," first year Federal way head coach Jamie Tough said. "These are fantastic girl gymnasts. We're in good shape for next year although we have some good seniors. Our goal is to build on what we've done."
