Quakers best Beavers

An old public-service ad designed to discourage reckless driving used
the tagline, "Speed kills." The same slogan was on display last Friday
at Memorial Stadium, as the Franklin Quarkers burned the Ballard Beavers
football team time after time for long plays. The end result was a
39-20 thumping by Franklin.
Quakers quarterback Jordan Daisy blossomed, completing 12-of-14 passes
for 275 yards and three touchdowns. The Beavers, on the other hand,
dropped a tree on themselves with fumbled snaps and poor execution.
The loss, Ballard's fifth in six games this year, left head coach Alex
Barashkoff frustrated. "Too many mistakes. We had five turnovers,
including the one where we snapped it 20 yards over the quarterback's head
and turned it over on downs," he said. "Long night for the Beavers."
Franklin looked much better than a team still seeking its first win
after five straight losses. The Quakers are coached by former University
of Washington receiving great Mario Bailey, and Franklin wideout Pepe
Siva appeared to be emulating Bailey's UW highlight films. The fleet Siva
lit up the Ballard secondary with three touchdown catches-one for 29
yards, one for 68 yards, and one for 39 yards.
"We didn't stop number 18 (Siva)," Barashkoff said. "We doubled him up
in the second half, and he still beat us."
The game started out looking like it would be a close contest. Franklin
led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. Early in the next quarter,
after a Quaker field goal, Ballard quarterback Joey Bolinger found senior
wide receiver Daryl McIntyre on a slant across the middle. The
55-yard-touchdown pass made it 9-7, Franklin. McIntyre led all Beaver receivers
for the game, collecting six catches for 105 yards.
But Franklin came right back. On the second play of the next
possession, Daisy hit Siva for the 68-yard scoring catch. After Ballard fumbled,
the Quakers drove for another touchdown, and the Beavers never got
close after that.
For the third straight game Bolinger was bothered by a deep thigh
bruise that limited his mobility. He passed for 191 yards and two touchdowns
but had three costly interceptions.
"It's a little better," Barashkoff said of the injury to his sophomore
quarterback. "He's at about 70 percent, but he couldn't roll out."
A somber moment came in the fourth quarter when a Ballard lineman,
senior Steven Kennedy, was hurt on a play. Kennedy was tended to by
paramedics on the sidelines and later taken out of the stadium in an
ambulance. Barashkoff said Kennedy was experiencing numbness in his back and was
taken to the hospital as a precaution. He did not know the extent of
the injury.
The victory was Franklin's first of the season. Ballard (1-5) takes on undefeated Skyline this Friday at 8 pm at Memorial Stadium's Leon H. Brigham Field.
