King County prosecutors have filed charges against Tony Dale Green for the robbery of Irma Andrews in the Green Lake area on June 9 last year and crimes committed against several other victims.
Andrews, 90 years old, died on August 27 from a double cerebral hemorrhage. The King County Medical Examiner's investigation ruled the medical condition was related to the mugging in which Andrews was pushed to the ground.
Andrew's initial injury at the time was believed to only be a fractured hip
After receiving treatment at a hospital, Andrews was sent to a local nursing home for rehabilitation. There she fell several times while trying to go to the bathroom by herself, according to Linda Smith, Andrew's niece.
Because of those falls, King County Deputy Prosecutor Tim Leary said his office would not file homicide charges against Green. It would have been difficult to connect Andrew's death to Green's actions in court.
Leary said Green chose victims who were elderly or vulnerable. Green was finally caught last fall on Capitol Hill after he robbed a deaf and blind man who was confined to a walker.
Green, 52 years old, has been charged with a long list of crimes against at least five individuals. The charges include three counts of theft, three counts of possessing stolen property and burglary and two counts of robbery.
The top end of the standard prison sentence Green could receive if convicted is normally 15 years.
"We will seek an exceptional sentence above the standard range," said Leary.
Green has a long criminal history with felony convictions for possession of stolen property, forgery, burglary and several counts of theft.
