The Frankllin Quakers proved to be a little faster than the Ballard Beavers in track and field action last Thursday. Ballard settled for second place in a meet between the four Seattle Public Schools.
Franklin won with a score of 77, Ballard 70, Garfield 64 and Roosevelt 55. Ballard will be hard pressed to match it's second place showing at state last year as they field a younger, but deeper team that has been fighting injuries.
Both the boys and girls track teams now have identical 3-3 records to end the regular season.
The top two girls have both suffered from stress fractures in their legs and consequently have missed most of the season.
"That kills us," said Head Coach Bruce Drager.
Kalie Campbell, who was considered a strong contender to go back to state in the mile is healthy again and is trying to get ready for the 800, but Drager admits it would be a miracle for her to make it to the 4A finals. Campbell came back strong, winning the 800 in 2:51.1 Friday.
Sprinter Felica Tyson has also been hurt and just started running again.
Other winners on Friday included Bridgett Berg Espin-White and teammate Johanna Juarez in the pole vault. They tied for first with vaults of 7-6.
Drager says Katherine McDanold is doing well in the 100 a and 300 meter hurdles and sprinter Mikaela Winter is filling the void left by Tyson's injury.
Aly Erickson-Wayman and Bridgett Berg are running well in distance events. "They are improving and have an outside chance for state," said Drager.
Zack Gussin has been one of Ballard's top runners in both track and cross-country for the last four years. He will attend the University of Washington and compete on its track and field team.
The KingCo Meet is on May 10 and 12 at Eastlake. The District Meet is at Inglemoor on May 11 and the State Meet is May 26 and 27 at Pasco.
