Thanks to Rebekah Schilperoort and the Ballard News-Tribune for bringing to light the possible renaming of the future Ballard Corners Park ("Favored park name called a 'missed opportunity").
We received many suggestions for new names for the park to be located along 17th Avenue Northwest between 62nd and 63rd, ranging from Fishermen's Haven to Ballard Beaver Park to Scandinavian Heritage Park. In the end, Ballard Corners Park garnered more than three times as many votes as the next most popular suggestion, Boutin Market Park (in remembrance of the last grocer on the north side of the park).
The full results are posted at BalllardCornersPark.org. Former Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ken Bounds agreed to abide by the community's wishes and named the park "Ballard Corners Park" just before his retirement at the end of February.
All are welcome to come to our Design Workshop on Wednesday, March 21, 7-9 p.m. at the Ballard Boys & Girls Club. We'll be choosing a children's play structure and unveiling our donor recognition tiles in the style of Ballard's old street names embedded in the sidewalks along 20th and 24th Avenues. We need the support and input of Ballard residents to make the park a reality. We hope to see you there.
