It has been a good month for the Ballard Food Bank. Last week the organization accepted a $10,000 donation from the Ballard Rotary Club and a new executive director has been hired.
Food bank Board of Director's President Monica Greenberg was not ready to release the name of the new director, but promised to introduce her to the community in the coming weeks.
A new operations manager, Peggy Bailey has also joined the staff to run the food collection and storage part of the organization.
"The food bank is here to provide assistance to folks who need food. It's something that needs to be done," said Roger Martindill, Rotary president.
People held up paddles with numbers on them to donate funds in various amounts, totaling $10,150.
It was the second large donation from the Ballard Rotary. Three years ago a similar contribution was made.
"We are excited. The Rotary Club has always been a tremendous supporter of the Ballard Food Bank. It is something that does so much to help the neighbors in need," said Greenberg.
She said the money would be used for administrative and operational costs, along with staff salaries.
Last Tuesday, Greenberg represented the Ballard Food Bank at a Seattle Mariner's game, where she accepted a contribution from Trader's Joe.
"We're fortunate to have so many people donating and seeing their donations go to work in the Ballard community," said Greenberg.
The food bank already has generous support from grocery stores and the community to keep its shelves stocked with goods.
While the city of Seattle provides some limited funding, the primary source of money comes from individuals.
"Our real bread and butter are people who send use ten dollars every month. Neighbors who have supported us for years," said Greenberg.
Food is not the only service at the food bank. Clients can take advantage of meal programs at Calvary Lutheran Church three days a week, pick up clothing or hygiene products or other types of assistance such as using the agency for a mail stop.
