I have enjoyed reading your local newspaper. My son and I have lived in Ballard for over 26 years. My son, Joshua, has cerebral palsy, which means he is unable to do a lot of things himself.
Over the years, we have found the local businesses have always looked out for him. The people at Safeway, McDonald's, Burger King, Hollywood Video, Bartells, Ballard Library, Azteca and Ballard Market have always treated him with kindness and care. They all call me Joshua's Mom. I can never thank them enough for all they have done for him and me. We have always felt safe living in Ballard.
Recently, we found out that we will have to move because our building has been sold to a developer who wants to build condos. This means we have to find a new home. We have found this to be very difficult. Even with the best references. We have lived in the same apartment for 20 years. Have always paid our rent on time and have been good to our building.
My son has three cats who are his best buddies. I could never tell him he can't have them. I have written the developer three letters asking for help to move but he has never responded. I have explained that as a single mom with a disabled son, I don't have the money to move. I make too much for the city to help, but not enough for first and last month's rent, damage deposit, cat deposits and the cost to move. The developer continues to ignore me. I guess he just doesn't care.
There has to be a two-bedroom apartment or duplex where we could live?? We can't find anything. Once, we move, we don't want to have to move again. Ballard is the only place my son feels safe. And I know there are business people who will watch out for my son. Ballard is a small city in its self. A very good place to live.
Once again, thank you Safeway, Bartells, Ballard Library, McDonalds, Burger King, Hollywood Video, Azteca and anyone who has helped my son.
We love living in Ballard and find that townhouses and condos are all that's out there. What happens to the good people who end up losing their homes? My son is scared and is safe here in Ballard. It is not right that we end up losing our home. This is happening to other good people. What is happening to Ballard? There should be a place for all of us, not just the rich people who can afford a townhome or condo.
Why isn't there anyone out there who cares?
