Des Moines City Manager Tony Piasecki said last week that rumors Wal-Mart will build a store on Pacific Highway South are just that - rumors.

Piasecki was contacted by the Times/News, which had received an unconfirmed report that Wal-Mart planned to build a new store on the property currently occupied by Furney's Nursery, 21215 Pacific Highway S.

"Nothing's come through the door," Piasecki said in reference to applications for permits that would be required for such a store.

"We know that Wal-Mart has made an inquiry into the property, but that's where it stands," Mayor Bob Sheckler said.

"Over the years, a number of big box stores have made inquiries about [Furney's] property.

A Wal-Mart spokesman could not be reached for comment.
