Each Thursday I drive down First Avenue South in Burien, and when I go through the intersection at Southwest 152nd Street and First Avenue I see these A-frame signs telling people there is a farmers market in Burien.
This really gets people to notice there is a function going on and most likely brings people to the farmers market.
Since these folks are creating business this way, it must be OK to do it. Excuse me, wrong.
A-frames are prohibited in the city of Burien as per the Burien municipal code (BMC 19.30.040 l). Yet in sight of city hall and actually on city property, there are several more signs.
I guess what is good for the goose - city - is not good for the gander - small businesses.
It might be nice to create a sign code with realistic borders for A-frames since they do help businesses. Maybe limit one per business with a 3.5 foot height limit and professionally done. No hand drawn signs or messy looking, but attractive to the eye.
Then we could all announce our 50 percent off sale, or special purchase to pass on to the public. I might add that the sidewalk sale for Olde Burien was also advertised this way with A-frames.
Come on, city council, let's make this city really business friendly and stop letting your staff make decisions that you were elected to make.
I sat in city hall meetings and listen to the excuse that staff did this and staff did that. Even have heard city employees say that things are this way because your city council says this or that.
When I called a council person and asked when did this become an ordinance, they said it isn't. Lets get the council and staff on the same page.
It's election time again. Look at the records of current and past officials before you vote. Let's move this city forward - but not at the expense of the businesses that are already invested in the city.
