Burien Councilwoman Sally Nelson announced last week that she is a candidate for re-election to the city council.
"I have been honored to serve the citizens of Burien as mayor, deputy mayor and council member," Nelson declared. "I have helped provide a strong foundation for our city.
"Who remembers empty storefronts, and a grim Main Street? Imagine Burien without a skateboard park, and with more and more cell towers and shabby apartments."
She then pointed with pride to the revitalization of Southwest 152nd Street, the creation of active business partnerships, new and improved parks, many more community events, and safer streets and neighborhoods, which she has supported as a council member.
"The promise of an exciting Town Square" is another significant milestone that Nelson has supported on the council.
Nelson said she is "proud" of her "record of achievement" on the council, and her "ability to work with diverse groups and provide leadership on difficult issues."
Improved police protection has been one of her key goals. "The increase in police officers, an active block watch programs and reduced crime rates are important indicators of a safe city, and Burien can be proud of those achievements," Nelson said.
She has been appointed by the Association of Cities to represent Burien and the state of Washington on the National Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee.
Policy issues related to homeland security and police and fire protection are top priorities for the committee.
"My participation helps Burien and other cities secure funding for vital programs that create safe communities," she added.
Active citizen involvement is another top priority for Nelson.
"I appreciate the contributions hundreds of volunteers have made to improve our city. The success of Clean Sweep, the Strawberry Festival, the Farmers Market, Concerts in the Park, Art Walk and the Adopt-a-Park program are wonderful examples.
"In addition, the many citizens who attend our community meeting, public hearings and tune into Channel 21 to keep up on the city of Burien are more signs of a vibrant and civic minded community."
Nelson said she believes the crown jewel of Burien will be the Town Square development.
She emphasized that "much has been done to achieve our goal for the Town Square but many important decisions remain.
"I want to ensure that the citizens vision meets our shared goals of quality construction, a large open space for community events, residential housing and an exciting mix of retail space."
Nelson observed, "We have much to celebrate in our fine city, but much remains to be done. I want to continue to guide the city in a positive direction so we become an even better Burien."
