The city of Des Moines is looking for citizens to write statements for and against a proposed property tax levy lid lift.
If endorsed by city council members, the proposed levy lid lift would appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.
Lawmakers also would appoint two committees of up to three people each to write statements for the voters' pamphlet in favor of and in opposition to the levy lid lift proposition.
The measure under consideration by the city council would increase the regular property tax levy rate for 2006 to $1.60 per $1,000 of assessed valuation on real property.
If placed on the ballot and approved by voters, it also would authorize an annual increase in the property tax levy amount by 4 percent, setting the limit factor at 104 percent for each of the five succeeding years.
City officials told council members on Aug. 18 the proposed levy lid lift is to restore law enforcement funding levels, which have been reduced since 1999 because of sharp reductions in revenue.
To serve on this committee, individuals must support or opposed the ballot proposition and be willing to indicate their preference before being appointed.
Interested citizens should contact the city clerk's office by phone at 206-870-6519 by 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6.
