The transition from a long summer break to the start of a new school year is difficult for the entire family.
To quell those back to school butterflies, the Highline YMCA offers tips that can reduce "first day of school jitters" for children, adolescents and parents.
According to Patti Curde, senior director of community programs for the YMCA of Greater Seattle, back-to-school time is one of the most stressful times of the year for parents and students.
"Logistics, childcare, homework, new relationships and more must all be confronted and resolved if the family is to function efficiently.
"The best advice that I can offer families at this difficult transition is that good communication and planning are the best antidotes to future problems."
The YMCA suggests that parent keep the following tips in mind when thinking about the first day of school:
Safety First
Determine a safe route to school before the first day and practice several times before school begins. Avoid parks, vacant lots and fields.
Find a walking partner to accompany your child to and from school.
Be sure that all young children know their home telephone number and a daytime phone number for a parent or other trusted adult.
For the first few days of school, parents should walk their children to the bus stop and put them on the bus.
Coping with "jitters"
It is normal to feel anxious about the first day of school. It is critical to validate, rather than minimize, your child's anxiety.
Point out positive aspects of starting the new term - seeing old friends, meeting new friends - but do not overstate your claim and create unrealistic expectations.
Remind your child of other times when they were uneasy about something and how well it turned out, if you can do it honestly.
If starting a new school, your child may need some added support. Talk with him or her about the positive and negative feelings they may have.
Visit the school in advance of the first day and if possible, meet the teacher, principal and new classmates.
The Highline YMCA offers before- and after-school child care programs at more than 10 local schools with safe, high-quality, convenient, enriching and affordable care.
This program, at Seahurst Elementary School, is for school-age kids (kindergarten through age 12).
The services are designed to match school calendars. Care is offered on regular school day. Additional care is offered for early release and conference days.
Subsidized child care programs such as DSHS and King County Child Care Assistance are accepted on a limited basis. YMCA financial assistance, to the extent possible, is available for qualifying families.
Before- and after-school care is part of the YMCA's continuing commitment to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
