Burien celebrates fall with Von Boorian days
Thu, 09/29/2005
Celebrate the changing of the seasons with a cornucopia of activities for every age at Burien's biggest festival of the year.
The fourth annual OctoberFest/Von Boorian Days will run from Friday, Sept. 30, through Sunday, Oct. 2.
This year's event in the heart of downtown features live entertainment that includes a concert to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims.
Burien's only full carnival, a benefit walk to aid homeless women, a beer and wine garden, festival specials at the city's new Irish pub and more than 100 booths offering food, arts and crafts will add to the festivities.
Live entertainment will rock the festival stage at Southwest 152nd Street and Sixth Avenue Southwest each day.
The benefit concert Saturday for Hurricane Katrina victims will spotlight a variety of bands from morning until night, including classic rock cover bands The Daddy-o's and Danny and the Moments.
Paul Nelson, the benefit's organizer and a member of the Daddy-o's, said funds will be raised by passing the hat and sent to the Red Cross.
While enjoying the performances, event-goers can sip a mug of suds at the nearby beer and wine garden. Proceeds from the beer and wine garden go to OctoberFest's sponsor, the Discover Burien Association, to help defray festival costs.
Kick Saturday off by joining friends and neighbors for an easy 2.5-mile walk to help homeless women.
Miss Burien 2005, Amelia Gilbert, will lead the fourth annual 152nd Street Walk through town to Lake Burien. Proceeds go to Hospitality House, a 501(c)(3) shelter in Burien for homeless women supported by 11 area churches.
A preregistration fee of $10 provides entry to the walk and three tickets to a drawing for prizes donated by local merchants.
A $20 advance payment also nets a T-shirt and water bottle. Day of event registration costs $20, and includes one drawing ticket, plus T-shirts and water bottles as available. Preregister by calling (206) 243-1597.
Registration on Saturday begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Hospitality House tables near the festival stage.
Funtastic is back with a popular mix of carnival rides and games to delight young and old alike.
For youngsters and those who like to take it slow, the carnival features an abundance of easygoing rides like the merry-go-round. For the more daring, thrills and chills are delivered by the latest Scream Machine and more.
Mick Kelly's new Irish pub, located on the festival's grounds, will be dishing up festival specials and outdoor seating during the event.
For the price of a pint, customers can hoist a 20-oz. glass of any of the OctoberFest brews the pub will have on tap just for the festival. Free pretzels will be served, and the menu will add a German entree and dessert.
Also on Saturday is the 11th annual Champions for Children Benefit Gala for Burien's Ruth Dykeman Children's Center.
The event, which supports the center's work with emotionally and behaviorally impaired children and their families, will be held at the Seattle Design Center Atrium at 5:30 p.m.

OctoberFest is becoming known as Von Boorian Days in honor of Gottlieb (Von) Boorian, the man from whom the city of Burien takes its name.
The German-born (Von) Boorian and his wife, Emma, were among the first settlers in Burien. After arriving in Burien in the late 1800s, the couple lived in a log cabin on the lake that became known as Lake Burien.
Festival hours are Friday, Sept. 30, from noon to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The event will center on Southwest 152nd Street and Fourth Avenue South where the old Gottschalk's store is located.
Discover Burien is a nonprofit organization that works on the economic development and marketing of the city.
