The city of SeaTac's code enforcement staff has developed a new Neighborhood Grant Program to provide resident groups with matching funds for neighborhood improvement projects.
The program is designed to encourage neighbors to work together towards a common goal to improve and beautify their neighborhoods.
Their efforts will show people care about their neighborhood and may help in reducing local crime, according to city staff.
Examples of potential grant programs include identity signage for neighborhood entry points, curb side garbage clean up day and landscaping of traffic islands.
The Neighborhood Grant Program is a 50 percent matching grant. The citizens' share of the grant typically will be volunteer labor calculated at $10 an hour. Donated materials, supplies or a professional service will be matched at a customary rate.
All projects will be approved by the SeaTac City Council, which has dedicated $30,000 a year for neighborhood improvements.
Projects will be evaluated and selected based on a series of criteria, including planning, neighborhood support, "sweat equity," need, final project maintenance and benefit to the general public.
Most projects will be limited to $5,000, but the council will retain the flexibility to approve larger projects.
City lawmakers are encouraging residents to participate in the program by working with their neighbors to develop and implement qualifying projects.
A public open house on the Neighborhood Grant Program will be held Monday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. in the SeaTac City Hall council chambers.
