Miss Burien 2005 Amelia Gilbert has passed the crown on to her younger sister.
Melody Gilbert was named Miss Burien 2006 during a sparkling scholarship pageant themed “The Best of the Best” at the Highline Performing Arts Center Nov. 5.
Melody attends Highline Community College in Des Moines. She is the daughter of Charlotte and Dan Gilbert of Normandy Park.
In the talent competition, Melody performed a jazz vocal, “Bigtime.” Her community service platform is Eating Disorder Awareness.
She also received the People’s Choice Award.
Melody will compete in the Miss Washington Pageant this summer and could move on to the Miss America Pageant.
Jackie Graybill, a student at Pacific Lutheran University, was first runner-up.
The daughter of Jon and Retha Graybill of Burien, Jackie performed a classical piano solo, “Revolutionary Etude.” Her community service platform issue is The Choice to Wait.
She also won the Academic Award.
This year, Ayesha Brooks was picked as second runner-up. Ayesha is a Highline Community College student. Her mother is Cynthia Brooks of Federal Way.
Ayesha performed a classical vocal, “My Man is Gone.” Her community service platform is Promoting the Arts to Youth.
Amber Trillo will represent Burien in the Miss Seafair contest in July.
Amber, who plans to continue her education at Seattle University, is the daughter of Javier and Teresa Trillo of Burien.
Her talent segment was a photo journalism presentation entitled, “Louisiana, A Brand New Day.” Amber’s community service platform issue is Empowering Young
Women in the Workplace.
She received the Highline Exchange Club Service and Director’s awards as well as being named Miss Congeniality.
Entertaining the audience were Mackenzie Miller from the Hi-Liners and former Miss Buriens Becky Anderson, Laura Blue, Nicole Huling and Stacy Bakke.
Performers from the Burien Dance Studio also entertained and served as “little sisters” for the contestants.
Melody was second runner-up and Jackie was first runner-up at last year’s Miss Burien Pageant.
Last year’s Miss Burien Pageant winners did well in subsequent competitions. Amelia was selected first runner-up at the Miss Washington Pageant while Melissa Parks was crowned Miss Seafair.
