Re: Article entitled Memorial set for Jean Chase, beloved teacher, by Greta Mart, dated Oct. 26, 2005
First, allow me to thank you for the moving tribute to my former wife Jean Hill Chase. I do, however, want to clear up a misapprehension for the sake of her many friends and her family, namely, that Jean died "alone in the woods.'
When Larry went into a nursing home, Jean gratefully accepted the invitation from her son David Gray and his wife Ella to live with them. David and Ella live about three miles from Fall City in a comfortable, modern home in a lovely wooded acreage. Jean loved it there. After Jean went off dialysis, David and Ella cared for her constantly, night and day. Ella quit her job to be with Jean. Jean lived seven weeks off dialysis. She was never alone during those seven weeks. Friends of David and Ella visited almost daily. Two of those friends are nurses. Jean also had the services of the Hospice nurse and of her personal physician. I visited her on three occasions during her final weeks and took our daughter Kathy with me.
Jean died in the arms of her son, David.
I was there when the Hospice nurse made her first visit and heard Jean calmly ask her how much time she had. I was impressed by Jean's courage facing death.
