In journalism, as in most enterprises, even the best and strongest of rules are made to be broken. We have such a case here because of a letter to the editor that was published on Nov. 16.
This will be the last week any letters on this subject will be printed. No exceptions.
Debbie Loop, the very nice lady who wrote the original letterm, has apologized. See her letter as the first letter in the column below. There are also three letters supporting her and one that is marginally critical.
Loop was classy in her apology and adds that her employer and her school were in no way involved.
Lee Forte also writes that six responses was "overkill on the paper's part." Point taken.
We have a rule that all letters are printed at the length they are submitted unless we work directly with the writer to change length of comments. The rule has made the newspaper a favorite place for new and varied writer to send their letters. We appreciate their wide-ranging comments. We will reinstitute our policy and print all letters at full length.
Just not in this case. We think all sides have made their points.
We laud the Junction merchants for the way they deal with the many groups who seek support and assistance for the auctions and fund raisers. They simply cannot support every campaign to the maximum and stay in business. We are fortunate to have such a community that supports the needs of so many.
Now, on with the magic of Christmas and the holidays.
