A strong majority of West Seattle voters agreed with their fellow Seattleites to derail the monorail in last month's general election but West Seattle was only slightly more restrained in its opposition than people in the rest of the city.
While the elevated transit project went down to defeat with 64.5 percent of voters citywide saying no, 60.6 percent of voters in West Seattle wanted to push the monorail off its guideway.
There were 16,241 votes in West Seattle against the monorail and 10,550 votes for it in the Nov. 8 general election.
West Seattle voters might've been a bit more supportive of the monorail because the Green Line was going to come to West Seattle.
Anti-monorail votes outnumbered pro-monorail ballots in most West Seattle voting precincts last Election Day, according to results from the King County Elections office.
However, some West Seattle precincts were distinguished by the stiffness of their opposition. Voters were strongly against the monorail in voting precincts in Roxhill, Arbor Heights, Alki Point, Fauntleroy, The Arroyos and several precincts in the Admiral District.
Some West Seattle voting precincts opposed the monorail overall, but more softly. Voting precincts near Camp Long, Youngstown, Gatewood Hill, Westwood, east of Lincoln Park.
In a handful of West Seattle voting precincts, a majority of voters supported building the Green Line. Pro-monorail precincts popped up on Gatewood Hill, High Point, Cottage Grove, Pigeon Point. Genesee Hill and part of the Admiral business district.
At some places around West Seattle, there were neighborhoods where voters in adjoining precincts canceled out each other. One precinct would support the monorail while a neighboring precinct strongly opposed the project.
People living in precincts around where the proposed Delridge station was to be built supported the project. However a majority of voters in precincts around the Avalon, Junction and Morgan Junction stations voted against the monorail.
