Joseph Nepenias, 20, from Tukwila, died Dec. 17 after the car he was driving crashed into a tree.

According to police officers, Nepenias was going west in the 5500 block of South 152nd St. around 10 a.m., traveling about 60 mph in a 25 mph zone.

After passing a car in a no-passing zone, he swerved to avoid a collision with an oncoming car, and hit the tree when he over-corrected.

Nepenias was not wearing a seat belt.

Kidnapping, robbery

A man was robbed and kidnapped at gunpoint while pumping gas in the 23400 block of Pacific Highway South.

According to Des Moines police detectives, the victim was on his way home from work when he was approached by a disheveled looking man who wanted a ride. The victim said his father was waiting for him at home and was unable to give him a ride.

The suspect then asked for $5 for the bus, to which the man said he only had a debit card. The suspect then demanded that he go into the gas station and get money from a cash machine.
