Two Irish transplants, Mick Purdy and Adrian Kelly, are gearing up to introduce Burien to a bona fide St. Patrick's Day celebration.
Co-sponsored by Discover Burien Association and Mick Kelly's Irish pub, co-owned by Purdy and Kelly, the three-day St. Patrick's Day Blowout begins on the March 17 holiday.
"The weekend festival, highlighted by St. Patrick's Day itself, will feature Irish music, dancing, food and an outdoor beer garden," Purdy said.
All festivities will be located at Mick Kelly's, 435 S.W. 152nd St., a traditional Irish pub that is family friendly and serves food ranging from Emerald Isle dishes to American cuisine.
The doors open at 9 a.m. Friday for breakfast. Lunch begins at 11 a.m. with plenty of Irish specialties -- and the first of several bands will strike up a tune.
St. Paddy's Day will end in full Celtic roar with the always popular Haggis Brothers. The music is free until 5 p.m., when the dinner menu begins and a small cover fee will be charged.
On Saturday, the live music holds off until 10 in the evening.
For $3 on Sunday, patrons can enjoy Celtic dance performed to the live sounds of
Town Cryer during Celtic Roots' Family Ceili. Beginning dances will be
taught, and people of all ages are encouraged to participate.
Traditional Irish music by Erin McNamee at 5:30 p.m. wraps up the holiday weekend festivities.
The pub opens for breakfast at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. There is no cover charge either day.
Since Seattle's Irish pubs are always overrun with customers on St.
Patrick's Day, generating long lines of people waiting to get in, Mick
Kelly's is expanding its space into a tent outdoors.
"Thanks to help from Debra George and the Discover Burien Association, we
are able to set up a beer garden on the sidewalk outside the pub, which will
be open all day on the March 17 holiday," Purdy said.
Due to the anticipated volume of customers, the pub will only accept payment in cash after 5 p.m. on St. Patrick's Day.
