Teach the kids the importance of tidying up more than their bedrooms by bringing them to Burien's eighth annual Clean Sweep on Saturday, April 29 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
New this year, after working with other community member to give Burien a good spring-cleaning, the youngsters can blow off steam in the Burien Bicycle Rodeo from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The Burien Teen Leadership Council will also reward the young laborers with running games and other activities.
While this annual event focuses on the downtown area, last year it expanded into the residential neighborhoods. Block Watch captains and anyone else interested in putting together a group to spruce up their neighborhoods should contact Discover Burien at 206-433-2882 in advance to avoid duplicating efforts.
Clean Sweep is jointly sponsored by the city of Burien, Burien Economic Development Partnership and Discover Burien Association.
To kick off the event, participants should show up at the Burien Firehouse at Eighth Avenue Southwest and Southwest 151st Street in downtown Burien at 8 a.m.
Nab a light breakfast, courtesy of Burien merchants, while getting task assignments. Individual participants and the heads of groups are required to show up at the firehouse to sign releases.
Be prepared to do chores like sweeping, weeding, planting flowers, picking up litter and removing graffiti. Commercial establishments in the main downtown area may place unwanted business items in the alleys behind them for pickup.
Besides renewed community pride, a bonus for Clean Sweep participants is a barbecue-style lunch donated by Burien businesses, primarily Sal's Deli, plus a raffle of numerous items. Besides organizing activities for youthful Clean Sweep participants, the Burien Teen Council is selling "I Love Burien" t-shirts.
Be sure to wear work gloves and dress appropriately for the weather and the work. Debra George, executive director of Discover Burien, noted that limited gardening equipment will be provided, so bring a favorite yard-work tool, such as a rake, shovel or pruning shears.
After the event, swing by the Moshier Pottery Sale for sweet deals on
beautiful handmade ceramic artwork and pottery. The semiannual sale runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Moshier Arts Center, 430 S. 156th St.
