Ten minutes into the first half of the boy's soccer game against Roosevelt, Josh Guarino kicked the ball past the goalkeeper into the net and the Ballard Beaver fans went wild. Unfortunately it was the only point of the night at Interbay Stadium. As the sun went down and the temperatures cooled off, Roosevelt ran away with 3-1 win.
The defeat left Ballard 1-9-0 on the season in league play. Overall they are 4-11-0 with last Friday's Lake Washington game the last of the season.
With a relatively young team of 11 juniors and two sophomores to complement the six seniors, Ballard should be back next year with more experience under their belts.
Developing that experience will be the key to success in KingCo, considered by Head Coach Gary Hunter to be one of the toughest leagues in the state.
The Beavers attacking soccer style with defensive pressure on ball handlers led them to non-league wins over Mountlake Terrace (3-0), Bellevue (3-1) and Lynnwood (4-2). In KingCo, Ballard defeated the Franklin Quakers 3-0.
Guarino was the star in the Franklin game. He scored three goals with two assists from Josh Bardwell and one from Dan Menday. Goalkeeper Adam Carosso added a shutout.
Guarino also had a goal against Juanita with an assist from Alex Strickland. Bardwell had an unassisted score in the Bothell game.
The statistical leaders as of last week were Bardwell with five goals, three assists and eight points.
Guarino recorded seven goals to go with one assist. Erasmo Alvarado, had two goals and three assists. Mike Thompson contributed two goals and an assist.
Menday had a goal and one assist. Tado Kubo added one goal. Goalkeeper Carosso earned two shutouts.
Ballard will lose seniors Alvarado, Erik Araujo, Carosso, Kubo, Strickland and Thompson.
Players who will return as seniors next year include Joey Bodzewski, Drew Christie, Leon Granstrom, Guarino, Matt Hess, Nick Madore-Girouad, Menday, Eli Ross, Miles Rydinski, Nick Sangrey and Kyle Seago. Jack Allen and Bardell will be back as juniors.
Eastlake is the top team in KingCo with an 8-0 record, followed by Inglemoor at 7-1 and Juanita at 7-2.
Redmond , Roosevelt and Skyline are in the middle of the pack with identical 5-4 records. They are followed by Garfield at 4-3, Woodinville at 4-4, Bothell at 3-5, Lake Washington at 2-6, Ballard at 1-8 and Franklin at 0-9.
