High School District Superintendent John Welch has proposed cuts on the next budget aimed at closing a $3.1 million gap.
So far, Welch has found $779,000 in new revenue and nearly $1.9 million in budget cuts.
New revenue could be gained by applying for Medicaid reimbursement from the state for services provided to students, he says, and added money could come from transferring interest earnings on non-bond capital funds and facility lease income to the general fund. He says other revenue sources include increasing fees for full-day kindergarten, some summer school programs and rental of the performing arts center.
Welch says Highline could cut expenses by maximizing the use of grant funds, eliminating several central office positions and using non-teaching staff positions more efficiently, among other things. One cost-saving recommendation is to eliminate funding for school resource officers, police officers assigned to high school campuses.
