vehicle upholstery shop
Tukwila firefighters responded to a fire at Airport Valley Vinyl on May 29 at 7:40 a.m. Heavy smoke was coming from the building at 14612 Military Road S. when the first units arrived.
The building was stocked with vinyl, upholstery and carpet for cars and the fire spread quickly, making conditions hard for firefighters to reach the main part of the blaze.
Crews were forced to retreat because of a weakening structure and the fire was then fought from the outside with large streams of water trained into the building.
No one was in the building at the time, but four cars and two boats inside were damaged.
Fire units from SeaTac, Renton, North Highline, Burien and King County District 20 assisted the Tukwila Fire Department.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Mt. Rainier High fight
Two Mount Rainier High School students were pepper sprayed, another was tased and a school resource officer called for backup during a fight at the school on May 25 around 7:30 a.m.
A Highline School District security officer in the cafeteria monitoring students noticed a group starting to form a circle. Two students in the middle who were having a heated argument started fighting.
The security officer immediately radioed for assistance and gave orders to stop fighting. When the students ignored the officer, he sprayed pepper spray.
About 50 to 75 students around the fight were yelling and continued to instigate the fight as the Des Moines Police Department's School Resource Officer arrived and pushed his way through the crowd.
When the two students who were fighting ignored his order to stop, the officer discharged his taser on the student who was the primary aggressor, knocking him to the ground.
Other students then began to throw objects at the school resource officer, striking him on the head with a glass bottle.
The officer called for more assistance. The student was knocked to the ground and the surrounding students began to throw things at the officer. He was hit in the head with a glass bottle and called for more assistance.
With the assistance of additional patrol and non-uniformed police officers who responded, the crowd was quickly broken up.
The two students were treated for their injuries as standard procedure after use of pepper spray and taser is applied.
Criminal charges of disorderly conduct were forwarded to the prosecutor's office for both students.
