Not many business owners would tolerate a client's dog sleeping smack in the middle of her desk.
But for Jacque Haggard of Paws and Relax, Burien's new doggie daycare, it's all about giving her canine customers the attention they need, whether it's exercise, petting or usurping the boss's furniture.
Paws and Relax is inviting dogs and their humans to check out the daycare during their grand opening Saturday, June 17, from noon to 5 p.m.
Refreshments will be served, including dog cookies, of course.
A ribbon cutting for the new business will be Friday, June 16, at 2 p.m., followed by an open house with refreshments until closing at 6 p.m.
Paws and Relax is located at 145 S.W. 153rd St., in the alley between Southwest 153rd and Southwest 154th avenues, with access from First Avenue only. Hours are 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Friday; phone 206-439-7330.
Burienites may recognize Haggard from her store, The Natural Pet Pantry, where she sells the natural dog food that she makes without chemicals or preservatives.
Haggard and Barbara Arrasmith opened The Natural Pet Pantry four years ago on Southwest 152nd Street in Old Burien.
The Natural Pet Pantry also supplies their raw dog food to Darwin's Natural Pet Products.
So it's not like Haggard needed another business. But she saw a real need in downtown Burien for an enterprise that would care for dogs while their owners were at work or simply give their humans a break.
Haggard, Arrasmith and Jan Dillon opened the new doggie daycare next to E.B. Foote Winery in May, where they make sure the animals get plenty of activity.
"We wear the dogs out so when their masters pick them up they can go home and relax," Haggard said. "They're not having to deal with a hyper dog that wasn't exercised all day."
The facility has a large exercise room with a durable rubberized floor that keeps the animals from sliding as they play with the daycare's doggie toys.
A fenced 50-foot by 50-foot outdoor area for ball throwing is in the works. It will be double-gated so a dog can't slip out.
There are also sleeping rooms for both small and large dogs at naptime.
One of their rooms is reserved for dogs, or even cats or ferrets that require special care.
Paws and Relax can also help solve certain dog problems, such as going potty, with training techniques.
