Hot rods in Greenwood

Some of the sweetest cars in the Northwest will be showcased at the 14th Annual Greenwood Classic Car and Hot Rod Show on Saturday, June 24 with 500 immaculately maintained autos on display from North 72nd Street to North 90th Street.
"It's one of the best car shows of the year," said David White, who will bring his newly restored 1955 Chevrolet half-ton pickup Model 3100.
Like other car owners, White spends a good chunk of money on his car. White bought the truck for $10,000 and put $30,000 into it. His restoration project took two years and he finished a month ago.
Last year White brought his 1937 Chevrolet Master Deluxe Business Coupe to the Greenwood show.
"It's always great, you sit down for 30 seconds and then someone comes up to tell me a story. A Ballard guy said only fishermen buy these cars," said White. After a good summer fishing run, fishermen often bought the Master Deluxe. It was the most stylish car at the time.
Philly Hoshko, the event coordinator for Bold Hat Productions, expects car owners from as far away as Oregon to attend.
White comes to the show early because he is one of the volunteers. He helps car owners find their assigned spots.
"It takes 2 and a half hours to park all the cars," said White.
Hoshko says the long-term weather forecast is 70 degrees and sunny. She's keeping her fingers crossed.
When Mother Nature cooperates, up to 30,000 people have come to see the brightly polished automobiles.
Over 40 vendors will set up shop, selling re-printed car manuals, parts catalogs, original car manuals and other car related items.
This year there will be food booths selling elephant ears, corn on the cob, bratwurst and smoothies.
"Everyone loves the show, it has been going on forever. It's a tradition," said Hoshko.
The car show started 14 years ago as a way to highlight the best that the Greenwood Phinney neighborhood has to offer.
"We wanted to put on an event that would draw people to the Greenwood area that the community could work together on," said Ed Medeiros, the Greenwood Phinney Chamber of Commerce president.
The Greenwood Senior Center is getting into the act this year with a children's play area. Children can bounce around on an inflatable car or shoot basketballs. The play area will be on the lawn of the Lutheran Church on the corner of Greenwood Avenue North and North 75th Street.
The Awards Stage will be manned by Master of Ceremony Lance Lambert, writer and producer of the award winning Vintage Vehicle Show.
Prizes will be given for best convertibles, low riders, muscle cars, Fords, General Motors, street rods, custom trucks, classic antiques and other categories.
The Greenwood Classic Car and Hot Rod Show is hosted by the Greenwood Phinney Chamber of Commerce and presented by Red Mill Burgers.
