Family fun featured on Fourth
Tue, 07/04/2006
With three fireworks displays, a fly-by and a fly-in, a parade, bike races, and family festivals, there's no reason to leave the Highline area to celebrate the Fourth of July.
Especially with Independence Day falling on a Tuesday this year, the safe and sane choice is to stick close to home.
Burien
Jack Jaunal, retired Sergeant Major of the Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic, which is the highest enlisted rank in the Marine Corps, will preside as grand marshal (see separate story) over the Burien Fourth of July Parade at 3 p.m.
Serious bicycle riders will compete in the annual Joe Matava Memorial Classic Criterium Bicycle Races preceding the parade. This will be the second year for Washington State Juniors Criterium for racers ages 10 through 18.
The Wheelsport Cycling Team coordinates the races from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The races are geared to adults and youngsters licensed to race by the United States Cycling Federation.
Riders must register and pay an entry fee at the registration booth, which opens at 7 a.m. in front of Sal's Deli, 15212 Sixth Ave. S.W. Unlicensed riders can buy a one-day license to enter the beginner category in their age group.
Youngsters who are not licensed but wish to strut their bicycling stuff can do so for free during the final two races for kids. The young riders must use their own bicycle, wear an ANSI-approved helmet and have a parent sign the race waiver form. Ribbons will be awarded.
For more information, go to www.wheelsportcycling.com.
The annual parade through town will feature drill teams, antique cars, clowns, community groups, Sen. Maria Cantwell and more. Prizes will be awarded in different categories.
To enter the parade, go to www.discoverburien.com and register no later than June 30.
Throughout the day, the younger set can play for free on giant inflatable toys, including slides and bouncing rooms.
Event-goers can browse among arts and crafts booths or refuel with typical fair food like hotdogs. The beer and wine garden in front of Mick Kelly's Irish Pub on Southwest 152nd Street is the spot for adults to sip some suds and people watch.
The action will be centered on Southwest 152nd Street and Fifth Avenue Southwest in downtown Burien, where festival activities plus a reviewing stand for the parade emcee and judges will be located.
The route for the bicycle races and parade runs along Southwest 152nd to Second Avenue Southwest, and then along Southwest 153rd Street to Ambaum Boulevard.
The event is sponsored by the Discover Burien Association and cosponsored by Prudential Northwest Realty.

Des Moines
The celebration will begin with a roar at 12:25 p.m. with a fly-by flown by pilots from the 123rd Fighter Squadron out of Portland International Airport.
Two twin-engined F-15 Eagles flying at 350 miles per hour will travel from Commencement Bay in Tacoma to Des Moines in two minutes before heading west over other cities.
At 5 p.m., the gates open at the Des Moines Marina for family entertainment, fun, food and fireworks.
Admission is free, but you might want to bring some cash to purchase Tillicum Village open-faced salmon sandwiches for $4.
The Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department and the Des Moines Legacy Foundation will offer family entertainment and games from 6 to 9 p.m. The fun includes train rides, jumpy toy, basketball hoop shoot and ring toss. Cost is $1 per game or $5 for unlimited games.
At 6:15 p.m., the Caribbean steel drum band Bakra Bata performs, followed at 8:30 p.m. by the a cappella group The Main Attraction. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for comfortable seating.
The grand finale starts at 10:15 with fireworks launched from the fishing pier. Besides the marina, Des Moines Beach Park is another excellent viewing location.
The Des Moines Rotary Club sponsors the sixth annual Fireworks Over Des Moines with support from the city of Des Moines, South King County Fire and Rescue, Des Moines Legacy Foundation, Judson Park, Powell Homes and DOM Construction.

Tukwila Days will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday with Family Fourth at Fort Dent Park.
Kids' activities include miniature golf, climbing wall, inflatable bouncers and slides.
Bring picnic supplies or buy picnic food from vendors.
